Medicaid/CHIP State Residency

1. The State’s residency requirements for Medicaid are:

  • Applicants must live in Texas
  • The household is not required to have a permanent dwelling or fixed residence
  • The household must file its application in the county of residence
  • Applicants (other than migrant or itinerant workers) must live in Texas with the intention to remain permanently or for an indefinite period of time
  • Applicants who live in Texas for a temporary purpose do not meet the residency requirement

2. The State’s residency requirements for CHIP are the same as Medicaid except they are not required to file in the county of residence.
